Modern Carriage House Rethinks A Traditional Form Of Live/Work
A transitional home for a husband/wife contractor team, and future guest house, emulates carriage house planning with a two-bedroom dwelling over a shop, garage & mechanical spaces. To accommodate prevailing codes, the ADU had to connect to the future addition with conditioned space. The master plan therefore anticipates a courtyard home of which the ADU will make up the west leg of the ultimate "U". The challenge of providing efficient two-story egress to the future main house and the ADU's separate entrance, was met with an elegant combination of upper floor circulation spine and loggia beneath, or outdoor covered space facing the future courtyard.
