A Study in Volumetric Planning Gives This Compact Design Sustainable Grace
Developed carefully in section and volume, Villa Ravine is a unique three-bedroom home design proposed for the Parkview Northwest development of sustainable residences, master planned by this office based on low-impact site design principles. Transverse to the main form of the building, an upper floor bar provides a study mezzanine with roof garden above, and projecting den cantilevered over the main entry. Rendering this simple, dramatic gesture with contrasting materials and honest detailing, the design captures the thinking that efficient small homes require every gesture be pursued thoroughly and for maximum effect. The plans are free to flow and program flexibly with a double-height living area and alcoves for quiet rest, while vertical and diagonal views to distinct spaces prevent confinement. The surprise of a ship ladder stair to a secluded green roof which helps reduce the homeÕs carbon foot
print, makes for a moment of levity in a design statement on directness.
